DTC-1

2021

DTC-1 is a camera that refuses to show you what it sees. Instead of producing images, the system outputs raw binary code as text files — the fundamental structure of digital photography that normally remains hidden beneath visual representation. A single photograph requires 14 days to display on screen, or 53,000 printed pages.

The work transforms digital efficiency into analog endurance, using temporal and physical scale to create felt encounter with what we normally pass through instantaneously. The vast data infrastructure that supports every digital image becomes tangible: not explained, but experienced as duration and weight.

What appears immediate and simple — the digital photograph — reveals itself as a massive structure requiring constant technological mediation to become visible at all. The camera makes this hidden complexity impossible to ignore.

This is a collaboration with Michael Reisch as part of darktaxa-project.
