Part of the Learning Nature series, Cloud Canyon trains a neural network on photographs of Griffith Park — the urban wilderness in the middle of Los Angeles. Working from this constrained set of drought-adapted hills and scrubland, the system develops its own visual language for California’s particular relationship between nature and artifice.
The resulting images hover between the actual landscape and the machine’s interpretation of it: ethereal visions that merge desert light with digital imagination. What emerges is neither accurate nor inaccurate, but something stranger—a felt sense of place filtered through an alien perceptual framework.
