Part of the Learning Nature series, Winter Woods trains a neural network on photographs of winter landscapes from the artist’s farm in Bovina, NY. Working from this constrained set of bare trees, snow, and winter light, the system develops its own visual language — dreamlike interpretations that hover between digital imagination and natural observation.
The work doesn’t ask the machine for photographic accuracy. It asks for the machine’s unique understanding of seasonal transformation and dormancy. The resulting images are haunting — capturing something of our cultural anxiety about the darkness of woods, the unease that lives at the edge of bare trees and fading light.
