Little AI

2019-2020

Little AI extends the investigation begun in Tabula Rasa by exploring the physical constraints of machine learning systems. What happens when artificial intelligence pushes hardware beyond its limits? This work uses an underpowered microcomputer running machine learning algorithms it can barely handle. The struggle becomes visible: the device overheats, slows down, and the display flickers. These physical failures become the artwork itself, making the normally invisible stress of computation tangible and observable.

The sculpture reveals AI’s dependence on physical infrastructure. Heat and flickering screens expose the gap between what we ask computers to do and what they can actually handle. Rather than hiding these limitations, the work makes them central, showing that artificial intelligence isn’t abstract code but something that requires real materials, energy, and functioning hardware.
