DTC-1

2021

Digital image data consists of binary information that photography traditionally conceals beneath visual representation. This camera system exposes the fundamental structure of digital images by outputting raw binary code as text files, requiring 14 days for screen display or 53,000 printed pages per image. The work functions as material investigation of digital photography’s computational foundation, making visible the vast data infrastructure that supports visual representation.

The project establishes temporal and physical scale as conceptual parameters. Extended display duration and excessive printing requirements transform digital efficiency into analog endurance, revealing the hidden complexity of seemingly instantaneous digital processes. The work demonstrates that digital images exist as massive data structures that require technological mediation to become visually accessible, challenging assumptions about the immediacy and simplicity of digital photography.

This is a collaboration with Michael Reisch as part of darktaxa-project.
